The Deception of the Emerald Ring, by Lauren Willig.

This book is third in a series that, from its descriptions, sounded pretty promising. Napoleonic Era spies, swashbuckle-y characters, romance, suspense. Can't go wrong.

Yes it can. And it did.

This particular episode was vapid, fluttery tripe. The heroine is as canned as every other feisty Jane Austen rip, the romance was predictable and immature, and I all but forgot there was any sort of dangerous conflict to solve. The parallel modern storyline was even worse; that heroine's biggest worry is getting a date.

Getting. A. Date.

I thought we left this sort of thing in 1983?

Not even going to try the others in the series. Willig should be embarrassed, TBQH. This was nearly as bad as the Soulless books. 'Soulless' is right.

But that's a whole 'nother post.

The Crimson Petal and the White, by Michel Faber.

Coming out of hibernation.

It's been quite a while so I'll start off slow.

Thing the first: Winter and spring were very grey and wet. September's just about over so I'm coming up on that nonsense again. Will need to find some ways to seriously brighten the apartment up because I did not expect to be so affected by The Grey. Perhaps find some sort of calm or inspiration in The Grey this year? Will try.

Thing the second: Redoubling my efforts to refine this home-making thing. Household budget. Food plan. Organization and decluttering. I've been reading a lot about frugal living and I'm ready to make some big changes (Tom on board, of course).

Thing the third: I have things to do now. Things. To do. I work. I write. I dye yarn. I dungeon master. I blogger. You Jane. Speaking of work, it's at a local yarn shop, which is doing all kinds of horrible fantastic things to my fiber habit.

Thing the fourth: I haven't had some new clothes in oh-gosh-you've-got-to-be-kidding-me. Luckily, I've got a birthday coming up, and along with my shiny new financial plan, I should be able to work some wardrobe revamping into the next month or two.

Thing the fifth (last thing, promise): My favourite YouTube video recently.

I laughed for, like, 15 minutes at this.

No joke.

Eavesdropped with my Pumpkin Spice latte YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH.

Lady, to friend: I was talking to her and I noticed she had a book in her bag, so I pointed and asked if it was interesting. And y'know most people would say 'oh, it's not bad' or 'oh, i'm not too far into it yet' -- but she told me 'oh, I wouldn't read it if it wasn't.' What do you do with that?

...

What DO you do with that?
